Mercury Capri II The Mercury Capri, Fun Facts and Figures....

Taking its name from the Italian island of Capri, the Capri name badge has been used since the Fifties, with Lincoln first using it from 1950 through 1958. The Capri that was first associated with Mercury was a model line of the 1966 / 1967 Mercury Comets.

The next Mercury Capri was an European import in 1970, marketed simply as the "Capri", and was sold through Lincoln-Mercury dealers. This small sport coupe was sold in the US from 1970 until 1974. The Mercury Capri "disappeared" in 1975, but came back as a restyled hatchback as the Capri II for 1976 and 1978. This popular little imported sports coupe sold more than a half million units, outselling all imports except the VW Beetle in the US.

In 1979 the Mercury Capri changed to a domestically produced car based on the Ford Mustang. This Mercury Capri was part of the Mercury line up until 1987, when the Capri model name once again disappeared.

Reborn again in 1991, the Capri name once again appeared on a small Australian convertible, imported from Ford of Australia, as the Capri "xr2". The last of this Mercury "Capri" line ended in 1994.

Our Feature Car, the Mercury Capri XR2

Mercury Capri xr2The Mecury Capri XR2 was imported from Ford of Australia into the United States for the 1991 model year. This snappy looking little convertible was Ford's answer to the Mazda Miata convertible. It wasn't exactly a "sports car", but the Capri XR2 was cheaper than the Miata, and actually was one of the least expensive convertibles on the US market. There was turbo charged version available that came standard with a 5 speed transmission.

Marketed as "Sporty, but Practical" the little Capri XR2 convertible appeared to be headed for a successful production run. Things went awry quickly though, as the US implemented front air bag requirements, and production of the XR2 was delayed due to redeign requirements. By the time the Capri XR2 was finally made available in the US, the initial excitement over the car had disappeared, and the last of the Mercury Capri's, did as well in 1994.
