Ford Model T Information and Quick Facts
The venerable Ford Model T is often referred to as "The car that changed the world", was produced from 1908 until 1927. Henry Ford's Model T came to be known as the "Tin Lizzie" and the "Fliver." The Model T is probably best associated with the modern "assembly line" production technique. A little known fact though is that Ford didn't implement this "assembly line" approach until the 1914 production year. This production technique was so successful that at the end of the 1914 production year, Ford had built more cars than all of the other manufacturers combined.
This "mass production" and cost cutting methods set in place by Henry Ford, caused the price of a new Model T Ford to drop from $800 to about $300 in the early 1920's. This dramatic decrease in the selling price was made possible do to Henry Ford's "Waste not, Want not" theories. Wooden shipping crates that brought assembly parts to the factory were made to specs that allowed the wood to be used in production of the Model T body parts, small bits of wood scraps were turned into charcoal. The original company was Ford Charcoal, which later changed to the KingsFORD Charcoal Company.
The Model T Ford sported a 20 horse power 4 cylinder engine, which pushed Henry's car down the road at a top speed of about 45 mph. The 10 gallon gas tank was located directly under the driver's seat. Regular "non-safety" plate glass windows was used in all of the Model T Fords. The Model T became the first "world car" with production set up in Canada, England, Germany, France, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Denmark, Norway, and Japan. In the end the Volkswagen Beetle was the only car that ever outsold the Model T Ford.
